Letter to the editor

Whittington, H.S. (1975) Letter to the editor. The Pingelly-Brookton Leader, 15 October 1975. [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

Letter to the editor feature from H.S. Whittington, Chairman, Rural Water and Soil Conservation Committee.
Mr. Whittington responds to an article titled "Utmost pressure called for" featured in the Pingelly-Brookton Leader on October 8, 1975.
The article states that Mr. Mel Bungey, M.P. Federal Member for Canning has called on the Beverley, Corrigin, Quairading, Wickepin and York shires to exert pressure on the Western Australian government to approve of extensions to the comprehensive water supply scheme.
In 1967/1970 the Rural Water and Soil Conservation Committee asked the State Government to extend the comprehensive water supply scheme to areas which were desperately short of water, including York, Greenhills, Bullaring, and Brookton area.
The Public Works Department were instructed to conduct a feasibility study of the area and to estimate the cost of the extensions to the comprehensive water supply scheme.
This study was done and placed high on the State Government's to-do list.
A change of State Government in 1971, meant that a further request was made for financial assistance to extend the scheme.
The Federal Government sought the advice of the State Department of Agriculture on the priorities of the water deficient areas and the Department placed the Greenhills-Bullaring extension low on the list, with a number of reasons listed.
