The salty cloud over S-W irrigation

Zekulich, M. (1976) The salty cloud over S-W irrigation. The West Australian, 20 February 1976. [Publication] [Special Collections]

Article discusses the future of much of the irrigation area of the South-West is under a cloud.
The salinity build-up in the Wellington Dam is having an effect on irrigated pastures.
Some researchers predict that it could take up to 200 years for the salinity situation to right itself if nothing corrective is done, and if no further land is cleared in the catchment area.
There has been growing concern for some time that salinity in the Darling Range waterways and catchment areas have reached critical levels.
According to Dr. Adrian Peck, a principal research scientist with the CSIRO, the future will see cattle grazing among stands or rows of trees that have been planted in paddocks as a salinity control measure as there is a definite link between clearing for agriculture and increasing salinity in streams and dam catchments.
The author asks, why is Dr. Peck, project leader to a joint Public Works Department - CSIRO research programme on salinity, supporting a move for $250,000 to be spent on clearing and developing for agriculture, about 800 hectares in the Collie River basin where the Wellington Dam is situated?
