More comment on plan to beat salt

Whittington, H.S. (1977) More comment on plan to beat salt. The Farmers Weekly, 5 May 1977. p. 9 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

Letter feature from H.S. Whittington, Senior Vice President, Farmers' Union of WA, Chairman of Rural Water and Soil Conservation Committee.
Mr. Whittington responds to Mr. J.E. Watson, Deputy Commissioner of Soil Conservation, article, "Query on Brookton Plan to beat salt", saying that Mr. Watson is entirely familiar with the work on the Whittington property.
Mr. Whittington agrees the original contours were designed by a departmental officer but unlike the departmental officer, Mr. Whittington was not transferred to another area.
Unfortunately the original contours were not successful and the entire approach needed to be re-planned.
Mr. Whittington says that in his booklet, it clearly states that by holding the rain where it fell, production increased on the higher slopes, and it also increased on what was previously water-logged valleys.
The booklet, which Mr. Whittington wrote in 1975, "A Battle for Survival Against Salt Encroachment", paid due recognition to the Department of Agriculture for their assistance, is available on request.
