Help urged on salt problem

(1977) Help urged on salt problem. The West Australian, 20 April 1977. [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

Article regarding a meeting held at Collie urging the Farmers' Union to press for government help for farmers who tried to solve their salt problems.
The meeting was called by the Farmers' Union and held in the Collie Miners' Institute and heard from experts from the Public Works, Agriculture and Forestry Departments and the CSIRO, speaking of the increasing problem of salt build-up and the experimental work being undertaken.
The vice-president of the Farmers' Union, Mr. Harry Whittington, explained to the meeting about experiments at Brookton in which salt build-up was controlled by limiting water flow from the tops of slopes.
This method had worked on several properties and approaches had been made to the Public Works Department and the Agricultural Department to have a trial in the Collie catchment.
No decision had been made.
