Salt meetings: Promises and no action

(1977) Salt meetings: Promises and no action. The Farmers Weekly, 21 April 1977. p. 12 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Article discusses that farmers want action and got vague promises and technical explanations at a recent meeting at Collie.
The 80 farmers, miners and townspeople were left wondering about their prospects at the close of the meeting held to discuss the salt build-up in the Wellington dam and catchment area.
The meeting was arranged by the Farmers' Union and heard experts from the Public Works Department, CSIRO and Departments of Agriculture and Forestry report on the increasing salinity in the area, its effects and what was being done about it.
The audience was told of rehabilitation programs, including re-afforestation, diverted drainage, specialised agriculture and clearing bans, but details of compensation was not something the experts were willing to discuss.
