Salt problems can be overcome

Thatcher, J. (1977) Salt problems can be overcome. Elders Weekly, 20 January 1977. pp. 112-113 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

Two-page article discusses salt encroachment being a problem few farmers are without.
At the request of the Meckering Branch of the Farmers' Union, Mr. W.R. McPharlin, M.L.A. in co-operation with Mr. Harry Whittington arranged a field day at the Springhill property of Mr. Whittington in Brookton.
Fifty people attended from various areas of the State, including members of interested Government departments.
Mr. Whittington explained how as a boy he remembered collecting water from a creek on the property and by the 1950s he was forced to put in dams.
Two problems concerning the dams were, the risk of contamination and the water began to flow over the the surface.
Mr. Whittington installed interceptor banks, bored down to 18 feet, which stopped the surface water and also replenished the underground water supply.
The installation of the banks provided complete control over the water supply.

This article contains six images, one photograph of a paddock with a row of trees in the background; one photograph of a treed paddock; one photograph of a patch of clover; one photograph of a group of attendees listening to Mr. Whittington; one photograph of a windmill in the centre of a paddock; one photograph of a paddock.
