Department slams salt land study report from WAIT

(1977) Department slams salt land study report from WAIT. The Farmers Weekly, 2 June 1977. pp. 1-3 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

Two-page article discusses the scientific and technical validity of WAIT-Aid Ltd report on studies into Western Australian farmland soil salinity control.
The report was prepared two weeks ago by two research workers from the West Australian Institute of Technology.
The authors, Mr. R.H.A. Cochrane and Dr. A.Q. Rathur were involved in the study which was supported by the WAIT Environmental Studies Group and WA Farmers' Union.
The Director of Agriculture, Mr. Noel Fitzpatrick said that the report was largely a valueless document, misleading and it tended to promote the view of a ready solution to the problem of salinity.
The WAIT investigation was carried out on the Springhill property of Mr. Harry Whittington at Brookton.
Mr. Whittington has made considerable progress using his own theories to combat the salt problem on his property.

This article contains two portraits, one of Director of Agriculture; one of Harry Whittington.
