Thirty-two farmers in northern water plan

Busher, M. (1978) Thirty-two farmers in northern water plan. The Countryman, 14 December 1978. pp. 22-23 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Two-page article discusses getting 32 farmers, who between them own about 80,000 hectares of land, to voluntarily agree to take part in a long-term water control and drainage plan for their areas is no small feat.
This has been achieved by the Gutha-Canna Water Control group which is an indication of the concern in the area about water control and the accompanying problems of erosion and salt encroachment.
Severe damage in the area from summer storms caused local flooding, extensive erosion and costly damage to fences and roads.
Mr. Trevor Way, president of the water control group, and the secretary, Mr. George Maddern, both had done contour work on their properties and could see this was not the complete answer,
A three-way involvement of farmers, the Department of Agriculture and the Morawa Shire meant the group approach could get off the ground.
Department of Agriculture soil conservation officer at Geraldton, Mr. Dick Pearse is co-ordinator for the group.
Article further outlines the necessary goals and co-operation required to be effective.

This article contains three images, one of Trevor Way standing in a degraded paddock; one of Ross Lanagan drawing a mud map to Trevor Way, both crouching in the middle of a bare salt patch; one image of a D9 working on a section of a 5 kilometre long drain on Ross Lanagan's Canna property.
