12 Ballidu farmers at five-day salt school

(1978) 12 Ballidu farmers at five-day salt school. Herald-Tribune, 26 October 1978. p. 1 [Publication] [Special Collections]

A two-page article discusses the first farmer-training school in the Ballidu area was conducted by the Whittington Interceptor Salt Affected Land Treatment Society (WISALTS)
The training school was directed by Brookton farmer, Harry Whittington assisted by Koorda farmer Lyndon Henning.
The five-day school course commenced on October 16 on the property of Mal Harrington.
Aerial photographs and proper planning were the basic preparation used prior to surveying and bulldozing of the interceptor banks.
Mr. Whittington has been actively studying the salt problem on his own property since 1945, and had proven that water moved in streams and when the ground collapsed there was a water build-up.
The Department of Agriculture does not recognise the methods which are incorporated by WISALTS because the department's salt theory is that of a rising water-table and the conflict lies when WISALTS insists the salt problem is caused by seepage.

This article contains one image of John Kimber in the foreground digging a preliminary hole on the property of Ted Hasson with unknown, unknown and unknown in the background.
