Director replies to Dept critic

Fitzpatrick, E.N. (1978) Director replies to Dept critic. The Countryman, 28 September 1978. p. 14 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Letters feature response from E.N. Fitzpatrick, Director of Agriculture to Mr. Whittington's letter on September 14, saying that this unfortunately expresses a negative reaction to comments made at Koorda.
Mr. Fitzpatrick says the comment that the Department of Agriculture has not grasped the gravity of the problem as it affects the water and land of Western Australia, is totally incorrect.
The department has been aware of the significance of the problem, with the understanding of the basis of the salt problem has been developed from years of painstaking study based on careful measurement and observation by this department, other West Australian government departments and the CSIRO.
Mr. Fitzpatrick said that interceptor banks would be equally effective in retaining surface runoff but would be more costly and a very wasteful use of land.
Comparisons of aerial photographs taken by the Army in1943 and by the Lands and Survey Department in 1962 and 1972 indicate that there has been no significant reduction in the area which could be interpreted as salt land on Mr. Whittington's Springhill farm at Brookton.
