Teaming to fight salt

(1978) Teaming to fight salt. The Sunday Times, 10 September 1978. [Publication] [Special Collections]

Article discusses salt encroachment affecting some of Koorda district's most valuable land.
The Department of Agriculture has concerns with the salt problem and say the prime cause in most parts of the wheatbelt is saline water under pressure in subterranean aquifers, allowing upward movement of salt.
Department officers say the pressure is caused by intake areas on higher land which feed these aquifers.
The director of agriculture, Mr. Noel Fitzpatrick said there were some situations in which the movement of water could be intercepted with banks.
Brookton farmer, Harry Whittington who had introduced the interceptor bank concept has made a significant contribution, Mr. Fitzpatrick said.
The Koorda Shire Council and representatives from the WISALTS group held a meeting recently with a joint tour of WISALTS and departmental projects proposed.
