Magni, P.A., Pazzi, M., Vincenti, M. and Dadour, I.R. (2012) The new forensic entomology laboratory at University of Turin, Italy. In: 9th Meeting European Association for Forensic Entomology (EAFE), 18 - 21 April 2012, Toruń, Poland

Abstract

Forensic entomology is today worldwide accepted as an essential tool to reach the success on a murder investigation and not only. Cases involving stored products and infestations of human environments as offences against livestock and pets are now usually investigated with the scientific support of a forensic entomology expert together with law enforcement and all the other professionals appointed by prosecutor and/or defence. At present Italy can boast about a good number of forensic entomology laboratories scattered along the peninsula and mainly bound to Universities. Since 2007 the city of Turin has been the base of a forensic entomology laboratory (FELab) linked with the Public Health Service (ASL TO1). Because of the world financial crisis on 2010-2011 the priorities and money found of the ASL moved to a different direction. At the same time the University of Turin at the Department of Chemistry showed a great interest in the forensic entomology practice. From the end of 2011 a forensic entomology laboratory is hosted at the of the University of Turin and it is born thanks the collaboration between the Department of Chemistry and the Centre for Forensic Science at University of Western Australia. Beyond the work in foresic cases where insects are involved, the lab activity research is mostly focused on entomotoxicology. Students in particular from the Master program in "Clinical, Forensic Chemistry and Doping Control” can practice and apply for thesis. Moreover the lab has a strictly collaboration with the Regional Antidoping Center and Regional Toxicology Laboratory and with the investigative Police, Court and forensic Pathologists. In this poster we show the preliminary research works in which the lab is now involved. The lab is now open to collaborate with other lab and Insititutions to improve the knowledge in entomotoxicology for forensic purpose.
