Clearing ban called ridiculous
Zekulich, M. (1979) Clearing ban called ridiculous. The West Australian, 26 January 1979. [Publication] [Special Collections]
Summary
Article discusses the views of the president of the Cranbrook Shire Council, Mr. R. Ward commenting on the State Government's legislation banning further clearing of farmland without a licence in the Mundaring Weir and Denmark River catchment areas, and in the Warren and Kent River water reserves.
Mr. Ward said that a blanket ban on clearing was ridiculous and selective clearing should be permitted.
About 100 people, including Mr. Ward, attended a meeting at Frankland to discuss interceptor banks - a system of controlling farmland salinity, devised by a Brookton farmer, Mr. H.S. Whittington.
Also in attendance was the Minister for Works and Water Supplies, Mr. MacKinnon along with Public Works Department officials.
Farmers throughout the State are showing an interest in the interceptor bank system, which is in conflict with the recommendations by the Agriculture Department on salt problems.
The Minister, Mr. MacKinnon inspected a bank under construction near Frankland said that he was satisfied that the legislation was justified.
