Farmers want review of water Act
Gargett, R.K.D. (1979) Farmers want review of water Act. The West Australian, 7 February 1979. p. 49 [Publication] [Special Collections]
Summary
Letters feature from R.K.D.(Dick) Gargett, executive director, Farmers' Union of Western Australia commenting on the letter by the Minister for Works and Water Supplies, Mr. MacKinnon (February 1).
Mr. Gargett raises several points regarding the amendments to the Country Areas Water Supply Act.
The Farmers' Union and most farmers would agree with the need to have some form of control over the causes of stream and soil salinity.
Mr. MacKinnon admits that at best the measures for the Act may only arrest stream salinity.
Mr. Gargett suggests that what is required is a sensible approach to the problem under which farmers will not be prevented from further developing their land. This will avoid large-scale economic loss in personal lives, agricultural production and country and city agricultural enterprises.
Mr. Gargett claims that if the Government was sincere it would allocate further funds to allow research to solve these problems and would also do more to fund private research, along the lines of the WISALTS experiment.
