Catchment area clearing bans

MacKinnon, G.C. (1979) Catchment area clearing bans. The West Australian, 8 February 1979. [Document] [Special Collections]

Summary

Letters feature opinion from G.C. MacKinnon, Minister for Works and Water Supplies in response to Mr. Evans letter (February 3).
Mr. Evans appears to be admitting that after having supported the amendments on controls imposed on land clearing in southern catchment areas, he did not give the amendment careful consideration that the Government did.
Mr. MacKinnon says that he has stated many times in public that the confidentiality surrounding the amendment was deliberate, and we did not want the same thing happening after our experiences with the Wellington catchment area.
Contrary to Mr. Evans's claim, a great deal of thought and research has gone into the technical problem of salt encroachment.
Controls on clearing was not the only solution considered.
There was no haste by the Government with the legislation extended for two years with the guidelines having been available for 18 months.
