View feature discussing the land clearing restrictions issue with the danger of it becoming a political football with the farmers whose land will be affected, at the receiving end of most of the kicks.
The Farmers' Union has called for a full public inquiry into the imposition of and the need for restrictions, and also asked for independent research to be carried out into other methods of alleviating salt problems including the controversial Whittington interceptor bank method.
The controversy over the Whittington system has gone on for too long only serving to further confuse farmers, and casting doubts on the methods recommended by the Western Australian Department of Agriculture for combating salt encroachment of farm land.
