Article discusses the wrangle over land clearing bans in the Lower South West being no closer to resolution this week as the Government sought to justify its action.
Farmers' Union Executive Director, Mr. Dick Gargett appealed to all farmers, specifically to those affected, and all back benchers in Parliament to demand a re-opening of the issue with a full public inquiry.
Warren MLA, Mr. H.D. Evans has called for a select committee of inquiry into all aspects of the Country Areas Water Supply Amendment Act.
Leader of the National Country Party, Mr. H. Cowan said if the terms of any proposal put to Parliament by Mr. Evans covered the National Party policy on land clearing bans, it would be supported.
Mr. Cowan said that it was essential that the matter be dealt with early when Parliament resumed because the livelihood of some farmers in now in the balance.
Mr. Gargett said that if the Government was sincere in its approach it would allocate further funds to allow research to solve salinity problems, and it should also do more to finance private research along the lines of the WISALT experiment.
