'It is at least the fourth occasion in a year in which information has been withheld'

Evans, H.D. (1979) 'It is at least the fourth occasion in a year in which information has been withheld'. Western Farmer and Grazier, 22 February 1979. [Publication] [Special Collections]

Letter in response to the Minister for Works and Water Supplies, Graham MacKinnon from Opposition agriculture spokesman, H.D. Evans.
Mr. Evans claims that Mr. MacKinnon was being hypocritical on the manner in which the government introduced the clearing ban on Mundaring, Warren, Kent and Denmark catchment areas.
Mr. Evans said that the opposition, like the public has to depend on the government for information about action concerned with the running of the state, but some months previously the Court government denied there were to be restrictions on clearing in the catchment areas in question.
The government confirmed that licences would be required, however there was no indication in the bill or regulations of the extent of the controls referred to or to the criteria to which they would apply.
Mr. Evans says that Mr. MacKinnon admits to deliberate secrecy on this matter, making a mockery of the Westminster system of democracy under which we are governed.
Mr. Evans claims that the lack of research is revealed by the fact that even the register of names of landholders on the catchments had not been compiled.
Supporters of Harry Whittington's WISALTS interceptor system are adamant that the government has only given minimum assistance in implementing his methods and the only assistance given has been with reluctance.
