Moves on salinity rub salt in the wounds

Zekulich, M. (1979) Moves on salinity rub salt in the wounds. The West Australian, 7 February 1979. p. 7 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

Article discusses the Premier, Sir Charles Court speaking at the Pastoralist and Graziers' Association annual conference held at the Sheraton Hotel in Perth.
The reception for Sir Charles Court was in contrast to the noisy and emotion-charged farmers who packed local halls and vented their anger at the Minister for Works and Water Supplies, Mr. Graham MacKinnon.
The Premier stated that he believed the government was doing the right thing and that when producers see what is happening in practice they will realise things are not as bad as first thought.
The State Government has taken the action to try to arrest increasing salinity in the Denmark, Kent, Warren and Helena Rivers.
The Government says that it has no choice but to impose the bans in an attempt to preserve future water supplies, because the position is deteriorating in these streams.
A Brookton farmer, Harry Whittington, claimed that the clearing bans were futile and would achieve nothing, adding that his interceptor banks would prevent water running over salt scalds into streams, thus having an immediate affect in reducing salinity.

This article contains one photograph showing farmers watch a bulldozer constructing a Whittington Interceptor bank.
