Salinity in water supply

MacKinnon, G.C. (1979) Salinity in water supply. The Farmers Weekly, 22 February 1979. p. 4 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

Letters feature response from Minister for Works and Water Supplies, Graham MacKinnon to a statement by Mr. E. Skinner published in an article headed "Union attacks city water", attempts to stifle rational discussion by appealing to farmers for an emotive response to unfounded statements that clearing controls have been imposed to ensure the water in south-west rivers is retained at a satisfactory quality for metropolitan use.
Mr. MacKinnon states that Mr. Skinner made the deduction from a statement he made when asked to comment at short notice on information released by the Commonwealth Minister for National Development to the effect that the salinity of Perth's water supply was higher than any other capital city in Australia.
Mr. MacKinnon clarifies the situation by pointing out that of the five river catchments over which clearing controls have now been imposed, there are two, the Helena and Collie Rivers which already have major storage with the Mundaring Weir and Wellington Dam serving country areas.
The Government had encouraged public discussion in 1976, prior to preparing the Bill for the imposition of clearing controls on the Wellington Dam catchment area.
The Government was guided in its decision to further amend the Act by recommendations made by the Western Australian Water Resources Council after close consideration.
