Move on salt research

Gill, I. (1979) Move on salt research. Western Farmer and Grazier, 15 March 1979. p. 8 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Article discusses the state government and rural industry representatives are to be called on to form a committee to observe salinity research in Western Australia and to recommend controls.
A seminar on salinity organised in Perth by the Pastoralists and Graziers Association have moved to form the committee.
Delegates at the seminar voted to ask the state government to establish the committee "to monitor, advise and review research into salinity, and make recommendations on controls".
Agriculture Department principal soil research officer, Trevor Stoneman outlined the extent of the salinity problem in Western Australia, saying that salt-affected land which previously had been productive totalled 167,000 hectares in 1974.
Senior scientist with the Environmental Protection Authority Dr. Maurice Mulcahy said salinity was one of the most drastic effects of European settlement.
Dr. Mulcahy stated that the traditional solution of establishing salt tolerant vegetation species did little to solve the water quality problem.
Mr. Stoneman said the most applicable immediate solution for the reduction of stream salinity was reafforestation.
