Hard Act to follow
(1979) Hard Act to follow. Western Farmer and Grazier, 1979. p. 4 [Publication] [Special Collections]
Summary
Ours feature explains the state government, concerned about increasing salinity in south-west river catchment areas has slapped a lightening clearing ban on all properties in those particular areas.
Secrecy surrounding the legislation can only be described as cowardly and hardly the way for a democratic government to act.
The legislation may or may not have justification but no evidence has been forthcoming to say a clearing ban is the answer.
The clearing ban has made varying proportions of farms worthless for hundreds of farmers and there is no way many will be able to stay viable on the land they have now cleared.
The problems and hardships this will cause appears to have been given only cursory attention.
