Farmers facing $10m. salt loss

(1978) Farmers facing $10m. salt loss. The West Australian, 13 April 1978. p. 23 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

Article explains that Western Australian farmers are faced with an annual production loss of $10 million because of the encroachment of salt on their land.
The Minister for Agriculture, Mr. Old gave this figure when he opened a seminar on salt-land research at the Claremont Showground recently.
Mr. Old said this was based on the value of the State's cleared agricultural land, adding that he was disturbed that the effects were widening.
Mr. Old noted that scientists had been offering suggestions to farmers on ways in which they might be able to use areas that were not too badly affected.
He said that researchers were gaining increasing knowledge of the mechanism of salt encroachment and hoped that this would enable them to devise ways to halt and even reverse the spread of salt.
