Letter to the editor - Salt content of water

Lefroy, F.E. (1978) Letter to the editor - Salt content of water. The West Australian, 24 July 1978. p. 23 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Letter to the editor by F. Edgerton Lefroy, Labouchere Road, South Perth, Western Australia.

Mr Lefroy states that the Minister for Health, Mr Ridge seems happy with the present salt content of Perth's water, which is about one-half of the ceiling value of the World Health Organisation's recommendation. The seriousness of the matter has escaped the Minister, that the salt content is steadily increasing and that there is no end in sight to this process. Mr Lefroy believes that reduction in salt levels in the dams due to overflow has diminished to a trivial annual amount, yet the concentration of salt continues annually and relentlessly, due to evaporation. He also says this is such a serious problem that the figures for all sources of water supply should be published regularly in the annual report of the Metropolitan Water Board to Parliament in a clear and conspicuous way.
