Salt: Morawa wants action

Collis, B. (1978) Salt: Morawa wants action. Farmer and Grazier, 11 May 1978. [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

Article explains Western Australia's controversial salt problem which is back in the spotlight again at Morawa where farmers were told the Agriculture Department had backed out of a system comparison experiment.
The Agriculture Department was to install its own system side-by-side to the Whittington system on a local salt-affected property.
Instead the department now wants to hold a seminar on the problem, a meeting that some department heads may want to stay away from.
The Morawa pasture improvement group president John Stephens said that this meeting would mean that they could tell the top department men what they think.
A primary industry representative on the WA conservation and environment council, Frank Broad told the Morawa meeting the department had decided against the side-by-side comparison as its scientists were not convinced salt land could be cured and reclaimed.
Farmers were left with a choice of either backing the Whittington system or doing nothing.

This article contains two photographs, one of Morawa Pasture Improvement Group members; and one of pasture land devastated by salt near Morawa.
The photographer is Brad Collis.
