Report on banks questioned

Gill, I. (1979) Report on banks questioned. Western Farmer and Grazier, 1979. p. 2 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

Article questions the basis and conclusions of a report which criticises the use of interceptor banks and drains to control salinity.
The Brookton farmer, Harry Whittington, who pioneered the extensive use of interceptor banks in Western Australia has dubbed the Holmes report, tabled in parliament last week, as 'a lesson in ancient history'.
The report was prepared by Flinders University Professor John Holmes for the Public Works Department after a three-day visit to Western Australia in August.
In Professor Holmes' introduction he states "the accepted theory of water flow through soils and underlying aquifers".
Mr. Whittington disputes the report saying that Professor Holmes could have stayed at Flinders University and written the report as he didn't do anything while he was in Western Australia.
The report called for the end of the trial of the Whittington system at Batalling Creek.
A spokesman for the Works and Water Supplies Minister Graham MacKinnon said the department will get the results from a second year and possibly third year of the trial.
Mr. Whittington stated that he believed the onus was on the government to show the public at least one area where state and federal departments' trials had controlled saline water and salt land encroachment to justify the clearing bans legislation.
