Search for tree cure

(1979) Search for tree cure. The West Australian, 3 January 1979. p. 45 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Overseas tree varieties may be used to help stem salt encroachment in country areas of Western Australia. The Minister for Forests said that his department was seeking information on trees that could be suitable, and that he had attended a world forestry congress in Jakarta where he had heard of salt-land afforestation work being done overseas. The State Government had allocated $60,000 for research into varieties of trees suitable for low rainfall areas where there was a salinity risk. There will be no special effort to increase the Forest Department's programme this year but there would be a special tree-planting programme involving the public. Regrettably the Federal Government has decided to reduce its involvement in afforestation.
