Experiments urged on salt curbs

(1979) Experiments urged on salt curbs. The West Australian, 11 January 1979. [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

The State Government has been urged to experiment on a big scale with methods to curb the spread of salt on land near South West catchment areas. The National Party MLA for Mt Marshall, W.R. McPharlin said that such a proposal should be examined immediately before the Government considered applying strict controls on land clearing on a wider area under recently passed legislation. Farmers in several centres have expressed their alarm at what they considered were wide ranging restrictions on clearing. Mr McPharlin said that the small project developed at Batalling Creek on the Wellington Dam catchment by Brookton farmer Harry Whittington using his interceptor bank system was showing promising results, but the scale of the project is inadequate to eliminate the now grave doubts about further land clearing in the South West. The experimental scheme would take in all methods of arresting salt encroachment, including the WISALTS interceptor bank system and methods recommended by the Department of Agriculture.
