Clearing ban angers south-west farmers

Collis, B. (1979) Clearing ban angers south-west farmers. Western Farmer and Grazier, 4 January 1979. [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

South West farmers in three big river catchment areas are up in arms over the legislation banning all further land clearing on their farms without a licence. Farmers were given no prior warning in order to prevent them quickly clearing land before the bill became law. Harsh penalties of up to a maximum $1,000 fine will be imposed for lawbreakers. Aerial photographs have been taken so the new legislation can be policed. A meeting of farmers held at Tonebridge last week to discuss the situation were told by the Member for Warren, Dave Evans and MLC Sandy Lewis that the possibility of future salinity problems had brought on the legislation.
