Land bans defied

Gill, I. (1979) Land bans defied. Western Farmer and Grazier, 21 June 1979. p. 3 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

Farmers in the south west are defying the state government and clearing their land, despite clearance bans. The Farmers Union south west zone president Eric Philliips said there was no doubt illegal clearing was taking place, although most he had heard of was only token clearing which farmers had been forced into "to show the government they mean business." When questioned about the illegal clearing, the Minister for Works and Water Supplies, Mr MacKinnon, replied that "I just think they (the farmers) are a bit silly."
