Abstract

Spanish colonialism in the Philippines began with conquest of the coastal stretches of Luzon and the central Visayas in the second half of the sixteenth century. During that time, the Spaniards came into direct contact and conflict with various groups professing Islam in the southern part of the Philippines in the Sulu chain of islands and Mindanao.
