Salt banks plan in question

Gill, I. (1979) Salt banks plan in question. Western Farmer and Grazier, 9 August 1979. [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

Article discusses the wide division of opinion over the value of interceptor banks in the treatment of salt affected land and the control of stream salinity.
Agriculture Department Katanning branch officer, Joe Burdass shares his views that advocates of the interceptor banks "seem to be losing sight of the facts and in doing so could be misleading farmers".
The Public Works Department has been accused of interpreting Harry Whittington's interceptor banks trail at Batalling Creek "in the narrowest sense".
Criticism has been voiced in a report to Works and Water Supplies Minister Graham MacKinnon, by WA University geography department head, Arthur Conacher.
Mr. Burdass argues that the main cause of salt is related to the movement of water deeper down in the ground which brings the stored salt to the surface.
Despite further examination of the banks at recent WISALTS field days at Kojonup, Tone River and Gnowangerup, Mr. Burdass confirmed his views are unchanged.
Mr. Conacher's views concentrate on the Batalling Creek experiment designed specifically to prevent stream salinity.
The progress report reflected a failure by the authors to realise the objectives of the experiment.
The experiment was to increase the amount of throughflow reaching the creek, to divert the flow around the waterlogged saline valley floor and to reduce the stream flow's input to the valley floor.
