All stops out in salt battle at Corrigin

Gill, I. (1979) All stops out in salt battle at Corrigin. Western Farmer and Grazier, 14 June 1979. p. 58 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Corrigin farmer Robin McMiles was faced with his productive land rapidly shrinking around him and decided to do something about it. He is a supporter of interceptor banks as a salinity control and is secretary of the Wogerlin Catchment Group which is affiliated with the Whittington Interceptor Salt Affected Land Treatment Society (WISALTS). In order to stem the encroachment of salt on his farm, Mr McMiles has brought other measures into play rather than use only interceptor banks. After writing for information on Holland's salt control measures, Mr McMiles set aside two three-hectare plots of land on which he applied gypsum. The purpose of applying gypsum was to turn the sodium in the soil into calcium. Mr McMiles claimed the interceptor system had virtually stemmed the progress of salinity on his farm and he hoped further work would help get back much of his salt-affected land.

This article contains two images: main creeks, widened to accommodate the banks and drains system; and Robin McMiles and the mole drains treated with gypsum, with an interceptor bank in the background.
