PGA calls for rivers study

Higgs, N. (1979) PGA calls for rivers study. Western Farmer and Grazier, 30 August 1979. [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

River diversions have been proposed to control salinity in the south west catchment areas. The Premier, Sir Charles Court has been asked by Jim Samson, Pastoralists and Grazier Association (PGA) president to instigate an independent feasibility study into diverting the Tone and Kent rivers into the Frankland to control salinity levels in the Warren River. PGA agricultural lands executive officer Graham Maisey believes that the two diversion channels could be built for around $800,000 each, allowing the clearing of the catchment Zone A and the Kent River water reserves to be relaxed. The Public Works Department report into south west clearing and stream salinity has already said that diversions would be costly and of little benefit. The submission recommends the government immediately allocate funds for a full diversion concept. John Ewing, a Perth consulting engineer, who has looked at the pastoralists and graziers proposals, has said the objective of the exercise was to prove the feasibility of such a project.
