Row over irrigation

Wilson, K. (1979) Row over irrigation. Western Farmer and Grazier, 23 August 1979. pp. 1-14 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

A problem which has surfaced between Western Australia's irrigation-area dairy farmers and the state government over water rationing and rises in irrigation rates. Harvey dairy farmers, Geoff Bach, a member of the Farmers Union, and dairy liaison committee member, Michael Johnston say that the issue of water rationing has been going on for 15 years with their fourth consecutive year of water rationing with a steep increase in rates being an extra 40 per cent up on last year. Wellington MLA, Margaret Craig commented on the water rates, saying that farmers knew the increase would be relatively steep because previous increases had been postponed at the farmers request.
