The state government is understood to be planning a major salinity and clearing control study into the salt lands and rivers of the South West. Guidelines are to be formed and presented but the south west salt problem is gaining top priority among government leaders. Conservation deputy director, Morris Mulcahy is overseas establishing contacts for a conference on salinity next March or April. It is expected that the government's recommendations will form the basis of future government policy. A recent government announcement of the formation of a co-ordinating committee which will determine research priorities and funding from government and private sources. The committee, headed by Forests Conservator Bruce Beggs, includes Farmers Union president Wolf Boetcher; Pastoralists and Graziers Association president Jim Samson; Agricultural Department deputy director Tom Smith and Conservation director Chris Porter. Its scope would encompass such projects as the Hunt Committee research into bauxite mining, the Kelsall Committee study into wood-chipping, the Forest Research Foundation's dieback investigation and the proposed salinity and clearing control study.
