Banks bring land back to production

Crowley, J. (1979) Banks bring land back to production. The Countryman, 19 July 1979. p. 8 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

A special field day was organised by Narrogin Department of Agriculture representatives, Tim Negus and Jerry Lemon at Popanyinning. The field day gave farmers in the Narrogin area an opportunity to learn more about the prevention and reclamation of land affected by soil erosion. Demonstration areas established on both Maurice Chopping and Ray Giles' properties were selected because their problems of soil erosion typified those encountered in the district. The trial involved the establishment of different types of prevention banks as well as soil reclamation, on over a total of 250 hectares at a cost of $6,175. Department of Agriculture representative, Mr Lemon said that the project had produced remarkable results. Farmers attending the field were provided with a demonstration of the work undertaken during the trials. The use of correct contour cultivation methods were a good preventative measure because machinery ridges acted as small contour banks and could hold several millilitres of water.
