Holmes report

(1979) Holmes report. Western Farmer and Grazier, 8 November 1979. p. 4 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

Both the Public Works Department and the Agriculture Department seem to have rather strange ideas about what is happening to Western Australia's farmland. And now we have yet another idea thrown into the ring by South Australian Professor John Holmes. Or rather, a lot of old ideas rehashed to look like new ideas/ Ours feature article discusses the report by South Australian Professor John Holmes. Professor Holmes' examination of the Batalling Creek trial of Whittington interceptor drains draws much on the conclusions of others and concludes with a pat on the back for engineers, scientists, soil physicists and agriculturalists. The Public Works Department is at fault that Professor Holmes was called on to make a report with only a three-day visit to Western Australia. There is perhaps one benefit from the failure of the government to come to grips with salinity in Western Australia, it has prompted farmers to try things for themselves. Some have been successful, some have not.
