Letter to the editor - Concerns about forest burns

Rooke, I. (1979) Letter to the editor - Concerns about forest burns. The West Australian, 28 November 1979. [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

Letter to the editor by Ian Rooke, Victoria Park, Western Australia.

Mr Rooke discusses the practice of controlled or prescribed burning carried out by the Forests Department to limit forest fires being effective in reducing the incidence and severity of bushfires. A practising biologist with several years experience working in the zoology departments of the University of Western Australia and Monash University of Victoria, Mr Rooke says that he is concerned about the eventual consequences of the large-scale manipulation of a natural biological system. If the forest is to maintain its health it is clear that components such as the forest litter layer and under-storey vegetation cannot be reduced or changed by burning on a short-term (i.e. five-year) cycle. The Forests Department have a short-sighted policy with consequences evident such as spread and proliferation of jarrah dieback fungus, rising water-table levels with associated salinity problems, nutrient loss from increased water run-off and change in the forest species composition.
