Nibbling at scrub that's left

Hundley, W. (1979) Nibbling at scrub that's left. 1979. [Publication] [Special Collections]

Opinion article by W. Hundley of Melville discussing the appointment of a committee to review State Government policy on the release of more Crown land for agricultural purposes with the Minister for Agriculture, Mr. Old stating that improved times had produced considerable interest in new land.
W. Hundley questions the justification in the permanent destruction of scrub every time agriculture experiences a temporary period of improved fortunes.
Quoting Allan Rogers (letters, West Australian, October 27, 1978) who claimed that 18 per cent of previously high producing land in his shire has been destroyed by salt, and a feature article (West Australian, November 18,1978) by Michael Zekulich stated that the agricultural regions lost to salt was estimated at 200,000 hectares and expanding.
Despite the appointment of the review committee, one prominent politician, while addressing a country gathering, predicted a huge increase in the State's agricultural output to be achieved by increased technology and the release of more Crown land.
The author says that farmers can consider the situation and demonstrate that there will be no votes gained by this constant nibbling at our remaining scrub.
