Clearing bans accusation: Department is 'untrustworthy'

Collis, B. (1979) Clearing bans accusation: Department is 'untrustworthy'. Western Farmer and Grazier, 11 October 1979. [Publication] [Special Collections]

Fed-up farmers affected by the south-west land clearing bans have branded the Works Department as "anti-agriculture". They have accused the department of being untrustworthy and have called on the government to censor this attitude. They are particularly dissatisfied with the department's handling of their clearing licence applications and resultant appeals. At a landholders meeting at Bokerup, Farmers Union junior vice-president, Winston Crane was asked to forward the farmers feelings to Works and Water Supplies Minister Graham MacKinnon. The farmers claimed they were fed-up with the attitude of department engineer, Ern Sheldon, who is liaison officer on the land clearing controls, and said the department was acting independently of ministerial direction with Mr Sheldon making statements in conflict with the spirit of agreements. Mr Crane pointed out at the meeting that the Public Works Department believe that stream salinity takes precedence over agricultural salinity and that the government needs to be convinced of the need for a combined research programme using the University of Western Australia, Agriculture Department, CSIRO and Harry Whittington.
