A tough task, keeping salt down on the farm

Summary
Diverting the salty headwaters of two South-West Rivers to reduce their salinity downstream seems to be a simple solution that will allow clearing bans on farms in the area to be lifted. It is not so, however. Farm from it, in fact, judging from talks with Public Works Department engineers. Such a scheme would cost millions of dollars and at the end, would the authorities be able to guarantee that other problems would not be created - possibly more serious in the long term that the answers it sought to provide? The Public Works Department is investigating a proposal for the Kent River and the Tone River, a major tributary of the Warren, to be diverted. The Pastoralist and Graziers' Association made a submission to the State Government to divert southern rivers, after bitter controversy developed earlier this year when clearing controls were imposed on four catchments in a bid to halt increasing salinity problems. These are the Mundaring Weir and Denmark River catchments and the Warren and Kent rivers water reserves. The study has been under way since early September, but it will be March of next year before any initial recommendations are made on whether further investigations are warranted.
