Confusion over clearing of land
Collis, B. (1979) Confusion over clearing of land. Western Farmer and Grazier, 11 October 1979. [Publication] [Special Collections]
Summary
Contradiction, confusion, half-truths and human despair have become synonymous with the shambles of the south-west land clearing "restrictions". Now nearly 12 months after the controversial legislation was introduced to parliament the situation is showing little sign of improving. A fact-finding mission by Farmers Union junior vice-president Winston Crane last week revealed that few of the 1,000 plus affected farmers have gained any real concessions from the rigid legislation. Despite some leeway from Works and Supplies Minister Graham McKinnon, farmers told Mr Crane that the Works Department has generally stuck to its original concepts. An action group meeting at Bokerup on Thursday night indicated many farmers were now accepting the legislation as irrevocable and were now preparing compensation cases.
