Whittington replies to Holmes report

Whittington, H.S. (1979) Whittington replies to Holmes report. The Farmers Weekly, 8 November 1979. p. 4 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Response from H. Whittington to Professor Holmes' report to the Public Works Department on the Batalling Creek trial discussing the number of equations, established over a period of time to calculate various movements of water in the soil.
The calculations can only be estimates when applied to soils where the soil structures have not been interfered with or changed.
Complex changes occurring in the soil which causes the salinity problem, interrupts the water channels and causes a change in the whole system.
In Mr. Whittington's response, he says that Professor Holmes completely ignores these changes as well as the data collected by the Public Works Department at the Batalling Creek trial site and assumed that the salt water was coming up under pressure.
Professor Holmes has no enthusiasm for the Wisalts drainage system and said that the capital investment would have been more effectively employed if the design had been guided by the principles established in the drainage industry.
