Letter to the editor - Arresting problem of salt

Richards, L. (1979) Letter to the editor - Arresting problem of salt. The West Australian, 26 November 1979. p. 33 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Letter to the editor by Lloyd Richards, President WISALTS, Quairading, Western Australia.

Mr Richards shares his views on the report by Professor Holmes of Adelaide University, who was invited by the State Government to come to Western Australia and report on the Whittington interceptor drain trial at Batalling Creek. Mr Richards says that it appears from Professor Holmes report that he sees the salinity problem as a rising water table, or water coming up in the lower areas under pressure. This theory has been advocated for many years and because of this no-one has ever been able to come up with a practical solution. However, Harry Whittington's theory that the salt and waterlogging problem is caused by surface and sub-surface movement of water with this being controlled and cured by using interceptor drains to cut off the throughflow of water. WISALTS was formed because farmers were no longer prepared to sit back and watch their land and water supplies go to salt. They want a full-scale trial of the Batalling Creek trial site to get quicker results and positive proof that the system will work as a water harvesting technique.
