Letter to the editor - The Whittington trial

Holmes, J.W. (1979) Letter to the editor - The Whittington trial. The West Australian, 20 November 1979. p. 45 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

Letter to the editor by Professor J.W. Holmes.

A response to a previous letter to the editor by H.S. Whittington published on 12 November 1979. The report titled, "The Whittington interceptor drain trial" was commissioned to review the experiment on Batalling Creek, in the Wellington Dam catchment. Professor Holmes says that Mr Whittington, while being helpful during his visit, disagreed with Professor Holmes over the fundamental hydrology of Batalling Creek. There are suggestions that deep drainage could cure dry-land salinity relatively quickly, but it would be expensive. Reafforestation would be much slower in its effects and would take land out of agricultural production. Professor Holmes said that as a scientist he abides by professional standards of accountability.
