Letter to the editor - Salt on trial

Holmes, J.W. (1979) Letter to the editor - Salt on trial. Western Farmer and Grazier, 29 November 1979. [Publication] [Special Collections]

Letters to the editor by J.W. Holmes, Professor of Earth Sciences, Flinders University, South Australia.

Professor Holmes addresses criticism written in the editorial column on 8 November 1979 about salinity of soils and streams in Western Australian farmlands. He explains that the report stated that Mr Whittington's ideas and their application by WISALTS are wrong, this was not a personal attack but only meant to show by argument that the ideas are wrong. Professor Holmes believed the Batalling Creek trial was well conducted and the results analysed without bias, with the outcome showing no significant effect upon water and salt balances conferred by the shallow drains. He suggests that the farming community should be clamouring for guidance from the government departments upon well engineered drainage works and safe disposal of the salt in the saline drainage water.
