Report is 'deplored'

(1979) Report is 'deplored'. Western Farmer and Gazier, 29 November 1979. p. 13 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

Arthur Conacher's critical evalution of the Holmes report, stating that Professor Holmes' "sketchy treatment" of salinity problems in Western Australia "is to be deplored". Mr Conacher claims that Professor Holmes' call for the Batalling Creek trial to be ended appears to be somewhat astonishing and stem from a number of serious deficiencies. He also criticises Professor Holmes belief that decisions relating to methods of salinity control should rest on advice of professional engineers and scientists. Mr Conacher's report also outlines where Professor Holmes confused the total wheat belt situation with the specific situation at Batalling Creek, where Professor Holmes paid scant attention to empirical, field derived data, used a theoretical model not appropriate to the situation under discussion and disregarded scientific standards - there was no means of knowing the derivation of much of his data.
