Attitude of scientists questioned

(1980) Attitude of scientists questioned. The Farmers Weekly, 27 November 1980. p. 17 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

The attitude of Western Australia's research scientists to methods of controlling land and stream salinity was questioned recently at a Land and Stream Salinity seminar held at Murdoch University. A significant feature of the seminar was the influence that physicists and engineers have held in the study of salinity and the nature of models used to study salinity problems. Dr van Schilfgaarde, Director of the United States Salinity Laboratory, saw benefits in the interceptor drain method being used by many Western Australian farmers for controlling water flow from shallow aquifers in local situations. He also saw the big gap in the extent of knowledge about soil salinity principles and the ability of scientists to apply these principles to get a solution to the problem. It was also evident that there was a major difference to the approach used to find solutions to the salt problems in Australia and the United States. An excellent example was presented in a paper by Dr Al Black, Director of the Northern Great Plains Research Centre in Mandan, North Dakota, outlining the benefits of altering the crop rotations to reduce the recharge of salt areas by underground water.
