Soil dogmas queried as productivity falls
Piggott, M. (1980) Soil dogmas queried as productivity falls. Western Farmer and Grazier, 9 October 1980. p. 59 [Publication] [Special Collections]
Summary
Fifty farmers from Kojonup, Katanning, Albany and Gnowangerup districts walked a Tambellup farm searching for clues to remedy falling farm productivity. Farmers including, Mick Jackel and John Brown of Ongerup, Graeme McRae of Napier, Mick Hilder of Kojonup, and Len King of Tambellup discussed soil analysis and getting the right balance of calcium, magnesium and potassium. Needilup grain and woolgrower, Gavin Davis says that this is a naturally poor country and is concerned by the acidifying effects of heavy phosphate and nitrogeous fertiliser applications. Experience shows there is a range of people who have something worthwhile to say about soils including Harry Whittington, Peter Bennett, Bob Pitman and Chapman and suggestions included holding a seminar in Katanning to hear what these representatives can share.
